A Longstanding Relationship: A Rose Garden Family Session

My first photos of this family were taken in the summer of 2015, and I'm photographed them at least twice a year ever since.  Capturing birthdays, maternity photos, and newborn photos is always special, but so are those in-between just regular family moments, which is what this session was about.  We went to the Bon Air Memorial Rose Garden, where I photographed them a couple years ago!  So much has changed - another kid being the biggest change!

Family of 3: A Tween Session

I feel like so often, families get excited about family photos for little kids and individual photos for high school seniors, and those in between years can get overlooked.  I had so much fun photographing this sweet sixth grader and her parents at the Bon Air Rose Garden in Arlington.  The day was HOT and oh-so-muggy but they made it a great session!

Rise Above: A Remission Session.

When I was pregnant, my daughter Ellie was diagnosed with Down syndrome and duodenal atresia.  I'd heard of the first, but not the second.

About a year later, I was in touch with another mom, pregnant with a little boy with Down syndrome and duodenal atresia.  I was able to share Ellie's story with her, and hear about little Alex.

Later, Alex was diagnosed with leukemia.  Having lost a childhood friend to leukemia, this broke my heart for Alex and spurred me on to cheer for him.  I wanted to take remission photos for Alex, because I care deeply for him and our whole Down syndrome community, and in honor of my old friend William.

Alex is a little warrior, and so is his mama.  This session brought me so much joy, and I as cliche as it sounds, I am so blessed to be able to capture these moments.

Wire and Honey, a shirt shop I love, provided the black "I Rise" t-shirt.  Capitol Maker created the "Done With Chemo" sign.

The shirt saying comes from a poem by Maya Angelou.  While the poem is about the strength of a Black woman, it seems to have the perfect line for Alex.  (And did you know that the disability rights movement stands on the shoulders of the civil rights movement?)

Leaving behind nights of terror and fear

I rise

Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear

I rise

Alex, we are sending you love and prayers and hopes for a wonderful, not-too-medical summer!

Welcome, Baby Girl: Arlington, VA Newborn Session at Home

Newborn photography sessions at home bring me such joy, but newborn sessions with friends bring me extra joy.  Our neighbors had this sweet little girl on Cinco de Mayo, and at ten days new, I headed over the back fence to celebrate with them and capture baby P.

She has a full head of hair, the best little facial expressions, and parents (plus two dogs) who adore her.  Her parents rarely looked at the camera, because they were staring at her!
